Digital field notebook

Field geologists have collected valuable data for decades. But the resulting data sets are mainly gathered on paper and not automatically stored in a dedicated Information System.

This project facilitates, secures and accelerates field data management thanks to a smartphone application for on-site collection.

We developped and deployed this application based on open-source solutions. The users can efficiently gather and safely store various field data such as pictures, observations, sedimentological logs, and files generated by other geoscience mobile applications (ex: FieldMove for structural measurement).

The app was already tested on the field by a team of IFPEN geologists. Feedbacks underlined the major time saving, notably in annotating pictures directly on the field.

Future work could connect the Digital Field Notebook to an immersive Virtual Reality platform to access and share field knowledge back at the office.
